Organising a Dive

The aim of the SSAC is to go diving and have a fun time doing it, however, great dives don't just happen they are planned. This is where the diving organiser comes in, their role includes choosing the destination, booking a boat and/or accommodation (if required), collect names, assign dive marshal and liase between the boat operator, people on the trip and the club committee.

Every trip also must also have a dive marshal and they must be a Dive Leader or above. Usually if the Organiser is Dive Leader or above they will act as dive marshal also but if this is not the case then they need to organise another person to be dive marshal. It is the dive marshall who, on behalf of the Dive Officer, ensures that the diving is conducted in a safe manor.

The first step
Discuss with the Expedition Officer the dates when you were thinking of planning a trip and the type of diving you were thinking of (reef, wreck, deep etc). Once an outline is agreed send the details to the web officer to put a proposed trip on the Calendar section of the website, once the boat has been booked, the trip can be changed from 'proposed' to 'booked'. It is also worthwhile sending an email to the club with the details of the dive so they can book a place if they want to. There is a table of contact details for our frequently used dive boats in Sydney or choose a different one yourself.

The weeks before the dive
The Organiser will collect names of people on the dive, this can either be done down the bar, or by sending an e-mail to the organiser from the link on the calendar page. Check with the treasurer that everyone who has signed up has paid the dive deposit into the club bank account. If a person fails to turn up on the day, the club uses the deposit will refund the Dive Organiser of the cost of the persons booking. Keep in touch with the dive boat regarding numbers and the planned dive site - which must be appropriate to the experience of the people diving.

The weekend of the dive
Check weather forecast and confirm with the dive boat the pick up point + time, number of people and the dive site. If the forecast is too bad it is your responsibility to cancel the dive and inform everyone that it has been cancelled. It may not be possible to make this call until the morning of the dive so make sure you have everyone's mobile number handy.

On the day
Check that everyone has turned up, if needed assign buddy pairs, and encourage the boat skipper to give a description of the dive site, currents, depth etc so that people can plan the dive appropriately.

After the dive
Collect the money and pay the boat. Send a report of the dive to the Web Officer for the Dive Log section of the website. If necessary report any incidents to the Dive Officer.
