On a sunny autumn morning the two Steves and a potential new member Stu met at Bare Island for an hour-long dive just before high tide. Initial reports from other divers suggested that we were in for a green, murky, low-visibility muck dive, and after entering at the usual spot just to the west of the bridge these reports seemed accurate, not to mention the colder water at 18C.

However, thanks to Steve W’s knowledge of the site and expert navigation we cut across the reef and then travelled along a gradually deepening slope consisting of sand and sparse sponge gardens, only to find ourselves at the beginning of the deep wall at 18.5m. Visibility here was much better and we spent the middle third of the dive admiring the fantastic underwater terrain and fixed sea life, before heading back to the shallows and returning along the shallower wall at around 10m. Other highlights include a Wobbegong, Octopus and various types of Leatherjacket although fish life did seem a little sparse.

Post-dive coffee and chat was enjoyed at The Boatshed, La Perouse.

An awesome SSAC shore dive!
