With the Spring weather turning it on Sam, Hartley, and the Steve’s decided to make the most of it and meet at Bare Island for an early dive. Bare Island is one of those classic Sydney shore dives characterised by the wonderful sponge gardens and plentiful marine life all around the island. The original plan to circumnavigate the island was adjusted due to the swell on the left-hand side and an out ‘n back dive on the right was decided.
A leisurely stroll over the bridge and across the rocks saw us descend in 3m of water and make our way out towards the Westerly point and round the back of the Island, Sam spotting an octopus on the way round. On the back of the island at 15m we found loads of colourful sponges showing a remarkable recovery from the storms that had all but wiped them out about a year ago. There were also numerous large PJ sharks and shark eggs scattered around providing plenty to check out. After exploring the sponge gardens 30 minutes was up and it was time for us to make our way back to the exit finishing up with a decent dive time of 65mins.
As always, post dive coffee and Breakfast was non-negotiable with Hartley and ST choosing more healthy options but Sam and Steve going for the big breakfast with all the trimmings to round out the morning.
Another great Sydney shore dive!
