Alas the recent snowfalls had melted by the time we got to Katoomba for this year’s Christmas in July, but that probably saved a lot of travel hassles as people made their way up on Friday evening. Most people were staying at The Coomonderry a charming, snug, cottage near the middle of town. As people tucked into Ross’ homemade Stilton, the entertainment was provided by a game Owen brought up called Cards Against Humanity – one not for the faint hearted.
Saturday started with a pleasant bush walk along Federation Pass, that goes round the base of the Three Sisters, to help work up an appetite. In the evening everyone got brushed up for a pre-dinner Gin ‘n Tonic (in both the regular format and new jelly form served with a side order of sherbet). The ‘Yulefest’ was at the Carrington Hotel, which as you approach at night certainly looks the part and the traditional bag piper leading the diners into the dinning room kicked off the five course turkey dinner.

On Sunday morning, in a break from the traditional cooked breakfast, Owen made a delicious Tex-Mex breakfast (Huevos Rancheros) aided and abetted by Ross’s/Jamie Oliver’s easy poached eggs that got everyone back on their feet and ready for the day and capped off a excellent weekend. Roll on Christmas in December!
