Shelly Beach October 2023

On the 15th Oct 1953, entrepreneur Oscar Gugen and science journalist Peter Small held a meeting at the Waldorf Hotel, London. Attended by 100 divers, it was agreed that ‘the title of the association of persons interested in underwater activities shall be the British Sub-Aqua Club.’ 70 years on from the birth of BSAC, SSAC was off to Shelly Beach, Manly for a celebratory dive. Just like Noah’s ark, the dives came in pairs: Steve & Steve with open circuit gear. Ben & Sam with JJ-rebreathers and last but by no means least, Andy and Fe with rEvo rebreathers.

The two Steves had a relaxing slow-paced dive to 11m and spotted the usual: PJs, Rays, a Wobbegong, schools of Luderick, Whiting & Old Wives. No Grey Nurse or duskies 🙁 but they did manage to perfectly execute a full circumnavigation of the bay. Ben and Sam got distracted by a Grey Nures Shark and ended up unintentionally doing a full circumnavigation of the bay.  Andy & Fe were fashionably late but had a nice dive.
