Shiprock October 2024

Waves Shape

It was a great way to finish off a sunny Saturday afternoon! The two Steves had Shiprock all to themselves for a 15m, 1 hour dive in pleasant 20C water. Timing our entry to perfection (at the 5pm Fort Denison high tide), we cruised along the base of the wall with the assistance of the current. Then after 30 minutes the current turned and assisted us to cruise right back at the top of the wall.

With the raking sunlight behind the wall, torches came in handy in some spots and the greenish 2-3m viz was only OK by Shiprock standards. For company we had the usual suspects: Leatherjackets in abundance, Eastern Talma and schooling Sea Pike, however the highlight as far sea life is concerned were the Moray Eels coming out of their holes (I counted four). In one case a couple of Morays were accompanied by two Banded Shrimp. Perhaps the fading light encouraged some of the normally shy critters to venture forth. Towards the end we got in some practice deploying DSMBs (thanks Paul!).

Given the late start we forwent post-dive refreshments and headed home, after another great SSAC shore dive!
