The Leap August 2023

Waves Shape

Fiona, Steve W and Steve T took part in a great drift dive from The Leap to The Steps at Kurnell. We entered the water at 8am, about three hours before high tide. It was overcast but very calm at both the entry and exit points. Water temperature was a comfortable 17 degrees, and visibility of around 10m was much better than expected.

After jumping in at The Leap, we headed northeast till we reached the wall, then descended to 21m. The brisk current allowed us to cruise past spectacular underwater terrain including a wall, boulders, gullies and distinct bommies with colourful sponge gardens and plenty of fish. There were many Port Jackson Sharks including quite a few juveniles, and a Weedy Sea Dragon – somewhat disappointing in that we only saw one, but for the most part we were travelling at a fair rate of knots. 50 minutes later we exited in calm conditions at The Steps for the joyful climb up the stairs and back up the hill to the top carpark.

The all-important post-dive coffee, breakfast and chat were at Milkhouse, Kurnell. Hats off to Fe for the great suggestion!

Another great Sydney shore dive!
