The Leap September 23

Waves Shape

When Captain Cook first landed in Kurnell in 1770 he must have been looking for Sydney’s best shore dive because that’s exactly what the Leap drift dive at Kurnell is; involving a giant stride entry into the water at the Leap followed by a effortless drift down into Botany Bay exiting at “The Steps”.

Although there was a small swell running into the bay Sam, Hartley, and the Steve’s decided to go ahead with the dive doing a car shuffle and quickly gearing up to get in the water by 8am to make the most of the incoming tide. With no time spent faffing about on the surface we quickly dropped down over the rock shelves to 22m to begin the drift towards The Steps. Even with visibility varying between 5 and 10m there was still plenty of action going on. We drifted past numerous PJ’s, a wobbegong, a decent sized ray, and most notably, THREE large weedy sea dragons that were happy to pose for our GoPros.

After negotiating the tricky exit, it was time for the habitual coffee and B&E up the road at The Milkhouse to debrief and decide on the next dive.
