The Steps Apr 2023

Waves Shape

Making the most of the sunshine before the predicted rain set in for the remainder of the weekend Mark, Paul, and the two Steve’s ventured beyond the usual dive spots and met at Kurnell to check out “The Steps” situated in national park just south of Sydney. After a quick check of the conditions and entry Mark and the Steve’s kitted up, however, with his BCD still on loan Paul was resigned to dive manager duties and shore cover for the morning.

The decision was made to dive into the outgoing tide and after an easy entry off the rocks the divers made their way west along the shore in about 12m of water. The first half of the dive was a relaxed push into the tide with a few eels popping out to say hello. After 25min the call was made to turn the dive and go hunting for the swim through up in the large boulders, although, after finding the swim through a huge wobbegong had decided to take up residence preventing any entry. Leaving the wobbie to rest and heading back towards the exit Mark spotted an active octopus having lunch under an overhang which kept the divers occupied for a while.

As always, no morning dive is complete without a post dive coffee and today was no exception. Heading up the road to Silvers for a quick coffee and chat just in time for the rain to set in before heading home.

Another great Sydney shore dive!
