TSS Currajong Oct ’24

In Sydney Harbour just off Bradley’s Head and right in the middle of the ferry and shipping channel lies the wreck of the TSS Currajong, a 67m long collier that sunk in 1910 after a collision with the SS Wyreema. Because of its dangerous location the wreck is not visited often so when the opportunity came up to dive the wreck at 1am on Sunday morning Steve W, Hartley, and Gary jumped at the chance.

Dodging the party goers spilling out of Catalina’s, we geared up and boarded the Abyss boat at Midnight for the short ride out to the dive site. After the last Manly ferry went past for the evening, we started our decent into the murky darkness not overly confident in what the visibility would hold for us. Surprisingly the visibility opened up to a lovely 5m at 25m depth, and whilst trying to not think of the bull sharks that might be lurking off in the distance, Gary led a thorough tour of the wreck. For a wreck 100+ years old it was surprisingly intact and there was even a few crays and wobbegongs hanging out that were probably wondering wtf we were doing there disturbing their sleep.

Making it back to the wharf just after 2.30am it was well and truly time to get some sleep. A fantastic dive on a very unique site.
