We met up at Gary’s place in Currarong on Friday night and enjoyed a glass or two of wine with some cheese before turning in for the night at a reasonable hour as it was a 7:30 am departure the next day.
Saturday started wet, very wet. Luckily, by the time we’d finished breakfast it was down to light drizzle. It is a 30 min drive to Dive Jervis Bay. We were booked in for 9am on Genesis, the faster, smaller boat, which we shared with three experienced locals. The sea was flat as a mill pond by the jetty so we set off with high hopes of getting out of the bay, possibly up to Drum and Drum Sticks. Alas, as we nosed round Point Perpendicular we ere greeted with a substantial swell (or walls-of-death as Michelle said, while rapidly turning green). Beating a hasty retreat we ducked back inside the bay and got a lovely first dive in at the point. After cheese, bread, crackers, soup and jam tarts, the sun deciding to show itself and it was once more back into the breech, this time at fish rock…about 100m west of where we went in for the first dive. Unsurprisingly it was more classic Jervis: plenty to look at, good vis and nice warm water. Before you knew it, the 60min run time was up and it was time to head home, getting back to the wharf at around 1:30pm. While we were waiting for fills it was over to The Bakery for pies and a cuppa.
After a relaxing afternoon and a round (or two) of gin ‘n tonics it was off to the bowling club for a slap up Chinese and Gary managed to pull off a double in the meat raffle (you have to be in it to win it!). We then retied back to the house for desert and a lovely sticky.
On the Sunday the plan was to do the local shore dive of the wreck of the Merimbula. Alas the swell was still up so that was a no-go. After some fun rock pooling, a few people ducked in for a snorkel in the relative shelter of the bay.
